An earthing electrode is only as good as the parts that connect it to your installation. The earthing accessories — busbars, strips, test links, connectors and clamps — are what turn a buried electrode into a reliable, testable, code-compliant earthing system. This guide covers the key accessories and how to choose them.
The main earthing accessories
Earth busbar. A copper bar (mounted on galvanised-steel brackets in an enclosure) that acts as the common connection point — all earth conductors bond to it, giving one clean reference. Ashlok’s busbars come in standard sections such as 25×3, 40×6 and 50×6 mm to match the fault current.
Earth strip (GI / copper). Flat conductor used to route the earth connection along walls, trenches or structures — GI for economy, copper for lowest resistance.
Test link. A removable joint in the earth conductor that lets you isolate the electrode to measure its resistance without disconnecting the whole system. Essential for routine testing.
Connectors and clamps. Rod-to-cable, cable-to-strip and strip-to-strip connectors. For permanent joints, exothermic welding is preferred over mechanical clamps.
Earth pit chamber cover. The lid that protects and gives access to the pit (see our earth pit chamber cover guide).

How to choose earthing accessories
- Size to the fault current — busbar and strip cross-section must carry the prospective fault current without overheating.
- Match the material — copper for lowest resistance and coastal/corrosive sites; GI where economy matters.
- Always include a test link — so earth resistance can actually be measured over the system’s life.
- Prefer welded joints for permanent, maintenance-free connections.
- Buy compatible parts — connectors, strips and busbars from one manufacturer fit and perform together.
Why accessories matter for compliance
IS 3043 and good practice require an earthing system that can be inspected and tested. The right accessories — especially the test link and an accessible chamber cover — are what make that possible. Skimp on them and you get a system that works on day one but can’t be verified or maintained.
Frequently asked questions
What is an earth busbar for? It’s the common bonding point where all earth conductors meet, giving one clean earth reference for the installation.
What is a test link? A removable joint that lets you isolate the earth electrode to measure its resistance without disturbing the rest of the system.
Copper or GI strip — which should I use? Copper for the lowest resistance and corrosive/coastal environments; GI where cost is the priority.
Do accessories need to match the electrode? Yes — size them to the same fault current and use compatible connectors for a reliable joint.
Are welded joints better than clamps? For permanent connections, yes — exothermic welds don’t loosen or corrode.
