Why Copper-Bonded Rods Are the Ideal Choice for Chemical Earthing Systems

One of the most important components of an earthing system in the electrical safety is the copper bonded earthing rod. But why is copper so universally recommended, and how do these rods differ? Let’s break it down!

What is a Copper Bonded Earthing Rod?

Copper bonded earthing rods are metal rods that consists metallic element steel and covered with copper. A special bonding process tightly connects the copper to steel for strength and durability. This rod is put into the ground as an earthing system. Its role is to safely divert any excess electricity, like during electrical faults, to the earth. It safeguards individuals, machines, and structures against electrical shocks or harm.

How Does a Copper Bonded Earthing Rod Work?

The primary purpose of an earthing rod is to channel excess electricity in case of a surge or a lightning strike safely into the earth, where it can be absorbed and neutralised. The copper bonded earthing rod gives a direct path for the electrical energy to flow into the earth when there is a power surge, electrical fault or a lightning strike and avoids having high voltage stored inside the installation.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Electrical Fault or Surge: When a nearby electrical fault occurs, or there is a lightning strike, electricity may flow into the system.
  2. Flow to the Rod: The earthing rod (the metallic one with copper or copper bonded) is grounded deeply in the earth which allows balance and transference of electricity through the rod.
  3. Safe Discharge: The rod safely channels the electricity into the ground, allowing it to disperse and neutralize, protecting the electrical system of the building and preventing hazards from occurring.

Why is Copper Recommended for Earthing Systems?

Copper is the first choice for earthing rods, and the reason behind it is the unique properties that it beholds that make it an ideal material for meeting electrical safety:

1. Excellent Conductivity Copper has an excellent conductivity, so it allows electricity to pass through it very easily. This is the case as copper facilitates the transfer of the electrical current quickly and safely to the ground when there is an electrical fault. This makes it a very safe option for earthing systems that prevent electrical shocks and equipment damage.

2. Corrosion Resistance Many earthing systems are subjected to extreme weather, high moisture and chemicals that may eventually lead to degradation of the earthing systems. Copper does not rust or corrode on its own, so it has a longer life and continues to do its job. Unlike some other metals, it does not degrade or break down, and is resistant to handling the elements.

3. Longevity and Durability Copper bonded earthing rods are very durable and outlast the rods of other metals. Copper coating protects the joint from corrosion; steel core provides rigidity. They combine to keep the rod effective for decades, grounding reliable homes and industries.

4. High Resistance to Oxidation With time, as copper ages, an ultra-thin, natural layer of protection (the oxide) forms on the surface of the copper itself. In this instance, unlike with other metals, this layer does not prevent copper from functioning effectively. It actually acts as a barrier to prevent rusting of the metal due to moisture, air, and other components, ensuring that the earthing system continues to work properly.

5. Compatibility with Other Materials

It goes well with others metals such as galvanized steel and brass which all three of these are used in earthing systems. This compatibility enables the different materials to function in conjunction without issues, such as corrosion or degradation. This also ensures that the system remains robust and secure, even with a diversity of materials being used.

6. Affordable and Cost-Effective

Copper can be a more expensive choice at the start, but is a wiser investment due to its durability and low maintenance. By using copper, you can save money in the long term on your earthing system as it will last longer, meaning less replacement or repair costs as compared with cheaper materials.

UL 467 sizes and micron coating: what to check

Not every “copper coated” rod is the same. A genuine copper bonded earthing rod is made to UL 467, which specifies a minimum copper thickness — commonly 250 microns — molecularly bonded to the steel core so it does not flake off when the rod is driven. Thicker copper means longer corrosion life. Common sizes are steel-core diameters of about 14.2 mm, 17.2 mm and 20 mm, in lengths of 1 to 3 metres, which can be coupled with threaded connectors to reach greater depths in high-resistivity soil. When you compare suppliers, ask for the micron rating and the standard — not just “copper coated” — because that single number decides how long the earth lasts.
